Another Perspective….

I’ve been holding off on posting about the Michael Vick situation because I am one who is pretty sick of people being convicted by the main stream media before they ever see a court room. Yes, sometimes it is pretty damn obvious when someone is guilty. However, I believe in the fact that in our country, you are innocent until proven guilty. Period.
With that out of the way, anyone who knows me knows I’m a huge animal lover. Dogs, cats or other – it doesn’t matter. Although one wouldn’t put me in the group of extremists like PETA either. I read this quote one time and thought it was extremely relevant and interesting:
“I hold that, the more helpless a creature, the more entitled it is
to protection by man from the cruelty of man. ”“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged
by the way its animals are treated.”Mohandas Gandhi (1869-1948)
I’m honest enough to admit, that may very well make me a hypocrite because I love to consume meat. Beef, Pork, Poultry… doesn’t matter, I love it. BUT, I am the first one to admit to the fact that if I had to kill the creature in order to consume it, I would have to live as a damn vegetarian because there is virtually no chance in hell I could do it!
Back to Vick. I’m a huge Hokie fan and have been since 1992 when I moved to Virginia to attend college at Radford University, a Division I school without a football program. It’s a shame that the Vick name, in two situations if you include Michael’s brother, is associated with the great program run by Frank Beamer.
When I’m asked what I think of the situation, I first mention that he hasn’t been convicted of any crime yet and that he hasn’t pleaded guilty to anything – yet. However, based on the information made public – if in fact it is accurate and true – it’s simply disgusting, inhumane, criminal, and shameful. If convicted or if he pleads, he should be punished to the fullest possible sentence allowed by law. I hope the Federal Prosecutors do not plead down too far to the point where the punishment is an embarrassment. I do not see that happening, but you never know.
When asked if he should ever be allowed to play football again, I think the answer is pretty simple. If he is convicted of the crimes he is accused of, or he pleads guilty – he should have to do the time. If there comes a point where the NFL decides it will consider letting him back into the league, I highly doubt a team will take the huge public relations nightmare in relation to the potential reward. That being said, there is usually some team willing to take the chance. If they do, I think he SHOULD be given the chance – assuming he accepts the same circumstances he offered the poor dogs he punished. If he doesn’t perform to the team standards, he should be hung and/or drowned.
Case closed.
After returning from vacation and going back to work this week, I plan to do as little as possible this weekend. I’m whipped from a Friday where I spent 7+ hours in front of a grill for our Credit Union Member’s Appreciation BBQ on one of the hottest and most humid days of the summer so far. I put some sun screen on in the morning, but still feel like one of the over-cooked doggies I was serving up yesterday.
I’m sitting here watching the NASCAR Busch race from Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal. So far I’ve been impressed as it’s been a good race. Granted, the front runners are road course specialists but Scott Pruett and Boris Said are two of my favorite drivers so I’ve been enjoying the race so far. I wasn’t sure this track was going to be great for NASCAR type racing, but it’s been quite enjoyable to watch.
Speaking of which, if you like road racing and aren’t watching the Grand-Am Rolex Series you are missing some of the best road racing taking place these days. It’s definitely on my schedule to attempt to fit in a race somewhere next year.
Lastly, I’m in the beginning stages of bringing back my Darkcyte.com site. It use to be a pretty popular site with alot of regular visitors, but it just got to be too time consuming. For those who aren’t familiar, it was a site with information about personal finance and identity theft. It will have a similar format, but it will be in the form of a blog with alot of links and hopefully informative and helpful information. It will take me a few weeks to get the theme designed and the basic site structure in place, but I hope to have it up and running by the end of August. Of course, considering I’m also trying to manage two (Maxi Booter’s Pet Emporium & The Memorabilia Hut), and soon to be three, storefronts - we’ll see how it goes.
OK.. back to doing as little as possible. Until next time….
